CHARACTER INFO
Character: Barnabas Tharmr
Canon: Final Fantasy XVI, post death.
Age: Sixty something.
Background Information: King of Waloed and Warden of Ash
Much of Barnabas’ past is shrouded in mystery. So here is the headcanon I’m working with; He came from beyond the seas south of Valisthea. He was raised primarily by his mother, who inspired his zeal for the Circle of Malius. As a child, he and his mother made a journey from their home, fleeing religious persecution. His mother would later die from that when Barnabas was around thirteen. She trained him in martial arts and all sorts of weaponry, though his talent for the sword and spear outshone the rest. Her death would leave a mark on him, his start of hatred for humanity.
At sixteen, he started his conquest of Ash and eventually founded the Kingdom of Waloed. At the beginning, despite his mother’s death, he wasn’t too different from Clive. However, as the years wore one, he would slip into depression and misandry, Ultima would make himself apparent to him, and around his late thirties, Barnabas would give himself to him and become Akashic. From then on, he would gather the Dominants to him, bringing Garuda and Ramuh to his side for time, making their Dominants Benedikta and Cidolfus his Chief of Intelligencers and Lord Commander of his army respectfully. When Cidolfus’ loyalty started to wane, he drove a wedge between the two and secured Benedikta’s loyalty to him.
When Clive's status of Mythos became known to him, he started to work even harder to achieve his Master's goal, turning Waloed into a hell scape filled with Akashic.
Personality:
First Impressions
Barnabas appears as a cold, ruthless man. He appears indifferent to most things and will often refuse to speak if not particularly interested in what’s happening in front of him. Some might assume, correctly, that he suffers from depression. Also of note is his youthful looking features, looking young for a man in his early sixties, easily passing for a man in his mid to late thirties. Not unheard of, as people all age differently, but it is something that would stick out to people.
He can be rather seductive as well, despite, or rather because of his detached nature, having taken many people of all genders into his bed for various reasons; to gain their loyalty, for political reasons, and what have you. Not for love. He might have loved someone in the past, but at the moment, he doesn’t have a lover. He is fond of Benedikta, but it's not as a lover, more like a favored tool or a pet. When he seduces someone, he can make them them feel like his entire world, but he's unable to keep this up, as shown with Benedikta's constant worry about being worthy to be by his side, which while partly fueled by her own insecurities, was not helped by Barnabas' inability to bring himself to care as much as a normal person could. He can keep it up just enough, like giving scraps to the starving.
Motivation
Devotion is the main motivator for Barnabas, devotion to Ultima, fueled by his disgust for humanity, which itself was exploited by Ultima to inspire more devotion. He truly believes what he is doing is for the better of humanity. To make humans akashic, deprive them of their free will, as he believes free will is the root of all of humanity’s ills and the reason why people hurt other people.
Meeting Ultima, who was the God his mother taught him to worship, as only made his devotion stronger.
Other than religious devotion, his thirst for battle is the major other motivation. Once a battle proves interesting he’ll do everything he can to prolong the battle. His thirst for battle leads to his desire to conquer, to challenge himself to find someone who could give him a challenging battle. Due to his natural skills as a swordsman and warrior, he doesn't find much challenge in anyone.
His hatred for humanity is fueled by his mother's death first and foremost. Then seeing Valisthea's political state only fueled his distaste for the Twin Realms, he conquered Ash partly out of the the simple desire of a challenge, a desire to better the world, and revenge for his mother's death. When he had all of Ash under the Waloeder Flag, he tried to make it better, but failed, leading him to fall victim to his hate, which was when Ultima appeared to him. Ultima tricked him into thinking he was going to make humanity better, that returning them to an Akashic state would bring peace to Valisthea.
Barnabas, tired of seeing the realms squabble amongst themselves, cause nothing but chaos, being unable to care for the least of their citizens, and sure that Ultima loved his creations and only wanted what was best for them, like he did, devoted himself to his God's cause. From then on he saw the world as a place only he could save, until Clive was revealed to be Mythos, and then Barnabas devoted himself to making sure Mythos was complete, even at the cost of his own life.
At the end of it all though, Barnabas was a man who just wanted to be reunited with his family. While he does wonder if Clive was correct and free will wasn't the root of evil he thought it was very briefly, he ultimately can't let go of his devotion to Ultima and the hope his God would let him reunite with his mother in the afterlife. His last thoughts were of her.
Flaws
Again, his devotion, is on the level of zealotry. He will do anything and everything to get what he wants. He uses sex to encourage loyalty to him, he lets people do heinous things to children to make the perfect soldier. He doesn’t care about anything except doing Ultima’s work. Even to the detriment of the few people he does care about, such as Benedikta. He cut off her head and sent it to Hugo Kupka in order to further his and Ultima's plans. He turned almost all of Ash into Akashic because he sincerely believed that he was saving them from themselves.
His misanthropy and aloof nature are also flaws, he no longer finds joy in life, being utterly devoted to his God and His plan. Barnabas' misanthropy, is fueled by his mother's death, the continual suffering and misfortune humans inflicted on each other, and the boredom he found in those who challenged him for his crown. All of this, combined with the grief he never fully moved beyond after his mother's death, lead to disinterested and depressed man he became. This disinterest and hate he held let him turn a blind eye to the many monstrous acts committed by his servants. The only thing that gave him motivation was Ultima's plan. He could justify it all by saying he was doing it to save humanity from themselves.
His idolization of his mother is the flaw most exploited by Ultima. The death his mother is the biggest emotional scar he ever received, and one that Ultima made use of, often taking her form. Likely taking her form in the beginning to gain his trust. His final thoughts were of her and them finally being reunited. The relationship between him and his mother is rather twisted, she trained and taught Barnabas to be devout to Ultima. She taught him to fight, to conquer, and her death left a mark on Barnabas he never truly healed from. There seems to be a sexual element to their relationship as well, as Barnabas was happy to lay his head in Ultima in her form's lap while nude. Whether this part of their relationship before her death is unclear. It could be he immortalized her as the perfect woman as he lost her at an age when he was starting to mature sexually, or there could have been a sexual relationship between the two. Until we know for sure we can only guess. For now, I'm leaning towards the former.
It's likely that his mother was the one person he truly felt a connection to. He had friends once, before he conquered Ash, he had to have had an army behind him, no matter how much of powerhouse he is, but he probably never connected with them as much as could. He might have tried, he might not have, but his mother was the most important human connection he had.
Extra
Buried down deep, under the misanthropy, Barnabas is a warrior who craves a challenge and enjoys conquering. For years until his final confrontation with Clive, he had gone unchallenged, only Bahamut providing any entertainment, though not finding fulfilment in it. Once Clive proved to be a good fight, combined with the fact he was doing his Lord’s work.
He enjoyed his time conquering Ash. He enjoys fights. He’s blood thirsty, but only to a point. Only if his opponent can give him a good fight. Otherwise, he’ll lay flat whoever opposes him.
He is an analytical man, good at reading and manipulating people. He twisted Benedikta to his side, turning her against Cidolfus, and Hugo’s descent into madness was due to his machinations. If Kupka hadn't wanted Benedikta, he would have slept with Titan's dominant to twist the Warden of Earth under his control, to put him in Clive's path as a road block/building block for his role as Mythos while he turned Ash's population into nothing but Akashic thralls and prepared to invade Storm. He might be fond of Benedikta; she was another dominant and someone else who saw the world as the heartless place he did, and she was a useful spy and manipulator as well, making Kupka fall utterly in love with her that it made it easy to manipulate him even after her death, but she’s a tool to him, and he himself is a tool to Ultima.
Abilities & Inventory:
Barnabas is a master swordsman and able to summon Odin’s sword and spear to his hand at will. He can manipulate darkness as well, turning it into blades and using it to teleport from one place to another. He’s skilled with other forms of fighting as well, but he’s at his most dangerous with a sword in his hand.
His semi-prime form is different from the other dominant’s semi-prime forms; instead of glowing the color their element is associated with; he gains armor with or without a helm as he so chooses. His sword and spear can be destroyed, but they can be reforged from ambient aether.
His prime form is a giant in armor upon a six-legged steed named Sleipnir. However, for Escordvi, he’ll shrink to FFXIV minion sized. Since he gave his powers to Clive it’ll be harder for him to do so than before, but eventually he’ll be able to prime into Tiny-Odin and won’t be put off by the much smaller size, and if anyone makes fun of it, they’ll find themselves at the sharp end of his sword. His damage output is significantly cut back by the size difference, something else that won’t bother him. In fact, he might enjoy it and see it as a challenge.
Unlike the other Dominates, Barnabas never showed any drawback to priming, likely due to the fact he was akashic. In game, however, he’ll lose that benefit and become fairly drained after priming.
He's also a tactician, though his preferred method is brute force, he knows that sometimes something more subtle is needed.

ARMADA SELECTION
Corsairs While he could fit into either Armada, Corsair fits him best as it’ll have Benedikta and Cidolfus there. Also, the fact he’s a law unto himself. Being a Corsair fits him better because he’s a ruthless conqueror. He'll use the Corsairs to start his own fleet and conquer what he can of the world, believing that this new world is his reward for serving Ultima so faithfully.
